Setting it up

PageTime is asking for Screen Time access

App shielding is built on Apple’s Screen Time framework, and iOS will not let any app shield another without that permission. You grant it once, on Apple’s own prompt. If you declined it, you can change your mind in iOS Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time Access.

You can use PageTime without it. You lose the shielding; sessions, your library, the reveal and every number still work.

My apps aren’t being blocked

Work through these in order:

1. Check Screen Time access is granted, as above.
2. Open PageTime and confirm you have actually selected apps to shield — the session setup screen names them.
3. Confirm a session is running. Shielding applies for the length of a session and lifts the moment it ends.
4. Restart the phone. Screen Time occasionally needs it after an iOS update.

If it still doesn’t hold, email us — that one is a bug, not a setting.

PageTime can’t see which apps I picked

That is Apple’s design rather than a fault. The picker returns a token the app can shield but not read, so PageTime knows you shielded five things and not what they were. It is also why nothing about your app use can ever leave your phone through us.

Using it

I need a blocked app in the middle of a session

Tap I need to unlock on the session screen. It always works. It costs about twenty seconds — hold for five, choose a reason, wait ten — and the session still counts towards your day and your streak. It only loses its distraction-free mark.

The page scanner read the wrong number

It suggests rather than decides. Tap one of the alternatives it offers, or type the page yourself — manual entry is always available. It helps to photograph the page flat, with the page number in frame and reasonable light. On a two-page spread it takes the higher number, on the assumption that is the one you finished on.

My reading estimates look wrong

Every estimate is built from three figures you control, all in Settings: your reading pace in pages per hour, your usual book length, and how dense your usual material is. Change any of them and every number in the app re-reads from the new value. Your pace also learns from your actual sessions over time.

My streak broke and I did read

A streak counts any session logged on a day, and allows one recovery day. If a session ended without being logged — the app was force-quit mid-session, say — it will not have counted. Email us with the date and we will help you work out what happened.

Can I use it with an ebook or an audiobook?

Yes. Add the book and set its format. Print tracks pages, ebooks track per cent, audiobooks track minutes. Page scanning is offered for print only, because it is the only one with a page number to read.

Subscriptions and billing

What is free?

One reading session a day, with shielding, your library, the reveal and your own numbers. No account and no card. PageTime Full adds unlimited sessions, verified page scans, reading pacts, nudges before your scrolling window, and every ambience.

How do I cancel?

Apple handles billing, so cancellation happens on your device, not here:

1. Open iOS Settings
2. Tap your name at the top
3. Tap Subscriptions
4. Tap PageTime, then Cancel Subscription

PageTime Full keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for. Cancelling during a free trial stops it before you are charged — Apple asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

I paid and the app still says free

Tap Restore purchases on the upgrade screen, and make sure you are signed in to the same Apple Account that made the purchase. If it still won’t unlock, email us with the date of purchase and we will sort it.

Refunds

Purchases go through Apple, so refunds do too. Use reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and pick the purchase. If Apple declines and you think it was a fault on our side, tell us and we will make the case with you.

Your data

How do I delete everything?

Delete the app. There is no account and no copy on a server, so removing PageTime removes your books, sessions, streak and settings with it. There is nothing left for us to hold and nothing for us to restore, so export anything you want to keep first.

Is any of this uploaded?

No. The full detail, including the two network calls the app does make, is on the privacy page.

Accessibility

PageTime supports Dynamic Type, VoiceOver and Reduce Motion. If something in the app is hard to use with an assistive technology, tell us what and where — those reports get fixed first.

Requirements

An iPhone running a current version of iOS. PageTime is iPhone-only for now: there is no iPad, Mac or Android version.
